Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has described the PNG Chiefs brand as a powerful symbol of national unity, saying the club represents far more than rugby league as the country prepares for its historic entry into the NRL in 2028.

Speaking at the unveiling of the club’s official logo and inaugural supporter jersey in Port Moresby, Marape highlighted the team’s potential to unite Papua New Guineans from all four regions through their shared passion for rugby league.
The launch marked a significant milestone in the Chiefs’ journey, giving Papua New Guinea an identity to rally behind as it prepares to compete on one of the world’s biggest rugby league stages.
The club’s logo was designed by Papua New Guinean graphic artists, reflecting the country’s rich cultural diversity and national identity. The inaugural jersey features a black base, gold sleeves and traditional designs across the chest, celebrating the heritage and traditions that make PNG unique.

PNG Chiefs CEO Lorna McPherson said the jersey represents a long-awaited moment for Papua New Guineans to have their own team to support in the NRL.
The club’s arrival is expected to create opportunities beyond the football field, with hopes of inspiring young players, strengthening communities and showcasing Papua New Guinea’s culture to an international audience.
As anticipation builds towards the 2028 season, the Chiefs are working to establish a legacy that extends beyond winning games, with national pride and community connection at the heart of their vision.
For Papua New Guinea, the PNG Chiefs are more than a rugby league team — they represent a nation united by its culture, identity and love for the game.
