PNG CHIEFS LAND RECORD SPONSORSHIP DEAL AS BSP BACKS THE ROAD TO NRL GLORY

Papua New Guinea’s historic push into the NRL has received a massive financial and commercial boost, with Bank South Pacific (BSP) signing a landmark partnership to become the PNG Chiefs’ Principal Foundation Partner through to at least the end of the 2030 season.

The agreement, announced at Santos Stadium in Port Moresby on September 10, 2026, has been described by the PNG Chiefs as the largest club sponsorship in NRL history, underlining the growing commercial momentum behind Papua New Guinea’s arrival in the competition in 2028.

For the Chiefs, the partnership represents far more than a logo on a jersey. It brings one of Papua New Guinea’s most prominent homegrown businesses into the foundations of a club expected to carry the hopes of millions of rugby league supporters.

With preparations continuing for their inaugural NRL Telstra Premiership season in 2028, the deal provides backing during the club’s foundation period, the pre-NRL year and its early seasons in the competition.

BSP TO TAKE PRIDE OF PLACE ON CHIEFS JERSEY

Under the agreement, BSP’s iconic brand will feature prominently on the front of the PNG Chiefs jersey, with additional branding across training apparel and merchandise.

The partnership also extends into the club’s wider operations, including fan engagement, stadium signage, hospitality, executive access, academy and player pathway programs, community initiatives and match-day activations.

BSP will also become the PNG Chiefs’ official banking and financial services partner, as well as the club’s official Membership Partner.

The arrangement creates opportunities for the bank to connect with supporters across Papua New Guinea while helping the new franchise build its membership base and establish a strong relationship with its growing fan community.

The announcement was made by PNG Chiefs CEO Lorna McPherson, BSP Chairman Robert Bradshaw and BSP Group Chief Executive Officer Mark Robinson.

A MAJOR VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

McPherson welcomed BSP’s long-term commitment, describing the agreement as a significant moment for both the club and the country.

She said the partnership demonstrated confidence in the Chiefs’ vision and their potential to create opportunities for Papua New Guineans for generations to come.

BSP’s involvement, she added, reflected the significance of the club beyond its commercial value, particularly its potential to connect communities and contribute to the country’s future.

For a franchise preparing to enter one of rugby league’s toughest professional competitions, support extending beyond the inaugural season is an important part of building long-term stability.

Rather than focusing solely on the 2028 debut, the agreement establishes a partnership intended to continue through at least the end of the 2030 campaign.

BSP WANTS TO BE MORE THAN A SPONSOR

BSP Chairman Robert Bradshaw said the bank was proud to play a leading role in supporting the PNG Chiefs, highlighting the significance of a PNG-headquartered and majority PNG-owned company backing the nation’s NRL team.

He also pointed to rugby league’s unique ability to unite Papua New Guinea and said the bank wanted to contribute to the Chiefs’ wider nation-building ambitions, including raising the profile of rugby league across the South Pacific.

BSP Group CEO Mark Robinson said the agreement was designed to deliver benefits beyond traditional sponsorship.

He outlined plans for the bank to be involved on match days, engage with the growing Chiefs fan base and work with the club on community initiatives.

One important area of cooperation will be financial literacy, with BSP and the Chiefs intending to work together to improve financial knowledge and understanding throughout Papua New Guinea.

That commitment gives the partnership a broader community dimension, connecting the excitement of professional rugby league with an opportunity to deliver practical benefits beyond the field.

A PARTNERSHIP THAT CONNECTS BUSINESS, SPORT AND COMMUNITY

BSP’s existing presence across Papua New Guinea gives the partnership a national reach that extends well beyond Port Moresby.

The bank is headquartered in PNG and operates branches and local agents throughout the country, as well as across several Pacific Island nations. It serves more than 2.5 million customers, according to the NRL announcement.

That footprint creates opportunities for the Chiefs to engage supporters across different regions as the franchise develops its membership, community and commercial programs.

For BSP, the agreement aligns its brand with a sporting project carrying major national significance. For the Chiefs, it brings a prominent local financial institution into the club’s development at a critical stage.

The long-term impact will ultimately depend on how effectively both organisations deliver on their commitments, from supporter engagement and community programs to the club’s operational development.

THE ROAD TO 2028 GATHERS MOMENTUM

The BSP deal is another major step in the PNG Chiefs’ preparations for their entry into the NRL.

Building a new franchise requires more than assembling a competitive playing squad. The club must also establish the commercial relationships, infrastructure, membership base and community connections needed to sustain an organisation competing at the highest level.

With BSP now on board as Principal Foundation Partner, the Chiefs have secured a major commercial ally as they prepare to take Papua New Guinea onto rugby league’s biggest stage.

The partnership also carries a strong national message: a PNG-based and majority PNG-owned business is backing a team designed to represent the country in one of the world’s leading rugby league competitions.

For supporters who have waited generations to see Papua New Guinea represented by its own NRL club, every major milestone brings the historic debut closer.

The Chiefs’ journey to 2028 is gathering momentum — and with BSP backing the vision, the foundations for Papua New Guinea’s next rugby league chapter continue to grow.
