PNG Chiefs Make History: Willie Peters Appointed Foundation Coach Ahead of 2028 NRL Debut

The PNG Chiefs have taken a major step towards their historic entry into the NRL, appointing world champion coach Willie Peters as the man entrusted with building Papua New Guinea’s newest sporting powerhouse.

Papua New Guinea’s dream of competing on rugby league’s biggest stage has moved closer to reality, with Willie Peters confirmed as the inaugural head coach of the PNG Chiefs.

The appointment, announced on March 30, 2026, brings one of rugby league’s most successful coaches into a project carrying enormous expectations for the nation as the Chiefs prepare for their NRL debut in 2028.

Peters arrives in Papua New Guinea with an outstanding record after transforming English Super League club Hull Kingston Rovers into a trophy-winning force. Under his leadership, Hull KR achieved a historic treble in 2025, winning the Super League Grand Final, Challenge Cup and League Leaders’ Shield.

He further strengthened his reputation in February 2026, guiding the English club to a dramatic World Club Challenge victory over the Brisbane Broncos.

Now, the challenge is different. Rather than continuing the success of an established club, Peters will help build a new NRL franchise from the ground up.

A coach with a history of turning ambition into success

Peters’ appointment reflects the Chiefs’ determination to establish a competitive team capable of making an immediate impression when they enter the NRL.

Before making his mark as a coach, Peters enjoyed a playing career as a halfback, representing clubs including South Sydney and St George Illawarra in Australia, as well as Wigan, Widnes and Gateshead in England.

He later moved into coaching, working as an assistant at Manly, South Sydney and Newcastle before taking charge of Hull KR in 2022.

His impact at the English club was significant. After guiding Hull KR to the Challenge Cup final in his first season and the Super League Grand Final in 2024, Peters led the club to its most successful campaign in history the following year.

That record of building a winning culture is precisely what the PNG Chiefs will hope to replicate as they prepare for the demands of the NRL.

More than a coaching appointment

For Papua New Guinea, the arrival of Peters represents more than another major signing in professional rugby league.

The Chiefs are expected to become a significant part of the country’s sporting future, offering local players a pathway to the highest level while bringing international attention to a nation where rugby league has deep cultural roots.

Peters understands the responsibility attached to the role and believes the project has the potential to create a lasting impact beyond the football field.

“What we build with the PNG Chiefs can change the lives of Papua New Guineans for generations to come,” Peters said following the announcement.

He also acknowledged the vision of Prime Minister James Marape and expressed his determination to honour the trust placed in him by the NRL and the Chiefs.

His comments underline the broader ambition surrounding the franchise: to create a team that Papua New Guineans can identify with, support and take pride in for generations.

Building a team worthy of a nation

PNG Chiefs General Manager of Football Michael Chammas described the appointment as one of the most important decisions in the club’s development.

Chammas highlighted Peters’ ability to connect with players, build trust and unite communities around a common purpose.

Those qualities will be crucial as the Chiefs begin assembling their inaugural squad and establishing the standards, systems and culture required to compete in the NRL.

The challenge will extend well beyond tactics and match-day preparation. The club must recruit the right players, develop its football operations and create an environment capable of attracting talent while remaining connected to Papua New Guinea’s rugby league community.

Peters is expected to play a central role in shaping those foundations before the team takes the field in 2028.

The beginning of a new chapter

Although Peters will depart Hull KR at the end of the 2026 Super League season, he has made clear that his immediate focus remains on finishing his tenure in England on a strong note.

For the PNG Chiefs, however, the countdown to 2028 continues.

The appointment gives the expansion club an experienced leader with a proven record of building success, but the ultimate measure of his work will come when the team begins competing against the established powerhouses of the NRL.

Papua New Guinea has long supplied the game with passionate supporters and outstanding rugby league talent. The Chiefs now have the opportunity to turn that passion into a club capable of competing on the national stage.

Peters has the credentials. The vision is established. The next task is to build a team that can deliver.

For Papua New Guinea, the journey to the NRL is no longer just an ambition. It is a project taking shape, one major decision at a time.
